Sparky the Border Collie cross has a very important job ahead of him, a few months ago Sparky was selected by MNK9 as a suitable canidate for detection training.
Sparky has a great personality and is just crazy over his toy which makes him very trainable for detection work. Sparky completed his foundation training at MNK9 teaching him to detect and indicate on a find. Sparky is now at Carnarvon Gorge undergoing further testing and training to ensure he is suitable for the quoll detection.
The dog has to be very social towards all animals and show now distractions in his working enviroment. Once this stage of training is completed Sparky will return to MNK9 for the last stage of training then go back to Carnarvon Gorge for final operational testing and training.
Sparky’s job will be to locate endangered Quoll populations around Queensland and we wish Sparky and handler Amanda Harris every success in this important project.

Not everything natural is safe for our furry companions. Sometimes we don’t even realize the dangers we bring home and leave on the counter or in our cars or purses. How many women, right now, have a stick or two of sugar free gum in their purses. That simple little piece of gum or two could be lethal to your dog.
Xylitol is a sweetener used in sugar-free items like gum, cookies, muffins, candies and even toothpaste. Xylitol is a natural sweetener that is easily absorbed by the human body, but triggers a significant insulin release in dogs which rapidly drops their blood sugar and can permanently damage the liver.
Recent studies have linked the problems associated with Xylitol to acute liver failure and even death. Low blood sugar can be treated by your veterinarian, but liver damage, even with aggressive treatment, can make it difficult to save the dog’s life.
What Can You Do?
Knowledge is the first step to combat this problem! Keep your dog from getting sickTell everyone in your family especially children, who often share and bring gum home from school.Tell your friends, your dog groomer and pet sitter.Dog proof your house by putting up any artificial sweeteners and gum.Look through the ingredients of the sugar-free items that you might already have at home and your toothpaste.Diligently research the things that you buy.We have a Gum Rule at my house. Any and all gum whether it be sugar-free or not gets locked down!Keep an eye on your furry friend, if any items are missing or if your dog is a thief crate training may prove to be safest.
This is a serious problem and a relatively new find to the veterinary world. Come up with a plan as a family, discuss the dangers of Xylitol and keep your veterinarian’s number handy in case of any emergencies. The best advice I can give is that human food in general is not safe for your dog, keep human food out of reach and use only dog food/treats and food your veterinarian recommends. If you are conscientious about the problem and the dangers you can help ensure a long, safe and healthy life for your canine, but sometimes it is difficult to know all the substances that can negatively affect your dog.

We had a fantastic week on Groote Eylandt training our two Cane toad detection dogs Rusty and Ozzie to help keep Cane Toads of the island. The maintenance training on the dogs and the handler training ensured all are ready and operational on the docks and airport.
We even managed to do some filming for an up and coming show for an English production house featuring Ozzie to be broadcasted next year in the UK then the rest of the world.

This is my new puppy Maya, she is 3 months old born May 5 this year. I have been clicker training her for about 9 days and we’ve had her for about 14 days total. We use the harness for walking her and the bell to notice when she stops so we don’t yank her head off, the harness has worked a lot better then a regular collar when we go on walks.

Nearly all of my clients reward their dogs in the wrong way, without realising it. The messages we give our dogs are quite different to what we think we are telling them.....People think they take on the same messages as humans..

we are different species, dogs live in the moment and they are associating praise or the tone of the praise and if we praise at the wrong time, such as when they are feeling unsure or nervous then we can actually feed that emotion instead. When Im running a puppy school, if I have a nervous or fearful puppy, i i will ask the owners to simply ignore their puppy and let him/her comeout from under the chair or behind their legs of their own accord. A puppy does not need to be forced out, it will actually make them feeling worse, remember they are trusting they will be ok, if you take over and if you prove to them that their feelings actually get worse they will lost trust and respect for you and you will go backwards in your training.
Only praise when they are showing BRAVE behaviour. Ignore any NON BRAVE behaviour, it will make a very big difference to your dog if you follow these basic rules.
Your timing has to be spot on to priase, within 3 seconds I like to tell my clients, so they are onto it straight away when their dog is showing brave behaviour.
The 49th Annual NZIACO conference last week was a huge success and enjoyed by all. The venue was in the beautiful art Deco town of Napier on the North Island. With the official opening by Her Worship the Mayor of Napier Barbara Arnott the seminar was then under way with some excellent and experienced speakers. The animal control officers from all over New Zealand received a feast of quality information to assist them with their very important jobs. The seminar was absolutly first class with a great venue “The Napier War Memorial Centre” over looking the beach. Gary covered a variety of subjects including evaluation and temperament testing, Dog Bite Prevention, Signs, Electric collars and more.
It wasn’t all work as I managed to sample some fine wines from the Hawks Bay region, go Bungy jumping, Ride a Jet Boat at Huka falls, Helicopter joy flights and sky dive over the beautiful Lake Taupo . I Even fitted in some Skiing on Mount Ruapehu.
Congratulations to Grant Blackley for putting together a truly great event.
My thoughts are with the families of the 9 people that tragically had their lives cut short in the sky diving accident on the south Island of New Zealand and the Christchurch victims of the earthquake, the largest in NZ since the Napier Earthquake in 1931.
This is Nero, the photos were taken by Zoo Studios here in Brisbane. Nero has featured on television as Seans puppy on Totally Wild, a childrens program that runs on Channel 10. This is also where I have done some training with him, to show kids how to easily train their dog to sit, drop, stay and walk on the lead nicely. The show is pitched at 8 year olds and above and they cover all different types of animals and acitivites, its a lot of fun and a great time to be included in some segments. The people i worked with there were all so easy going and professional, it was great. I wasnt even phased talking in front of the camera.

God dude! Tight … God dude! Tight enough shorts? Don’t get too excited over your suckish trained dog’s lousy circle or else you’ll pop a wheelie in your pants and take out the camera guy. AND this thing you call a trick… is not a freakin trick!! You simply pulled your dog around you by the leash. ANYONE can do that. Don’t really need a how to video on it.

Look almost at the end of the video he tells the dog to sit, the dog apparently didn’t hear him so he just use his hand to push the dog’s butt down. Wow, what a fascinating technique. They call that teaching style “The old new follow your dog and use your hand to push and/or pull their butt technique”
