There are so many dogs out there who suffer from separation anxiety. Separation anxiety is a mental illness in our dogs. Any dog, any age can get it and it can be in different levels as well. Mild, medium, severe. With many of the cases I work with in the charity I provide free behaviour work for, the dogs suffer from some level of separation anxiety. The following can occur and are good signs as to what level the dog is suffering from.
When you go out and your dog is howling, barking, whimpering and your neighbours complain..you of course won't know this unless your neighbours tell you so!
Your dog might follow you around everywhere - stick to you almost, this is a clear sign of anxiety. If your puppy is doing this however, then remember this is a puppy behaviour as well so dont just assume they are sticking to you!
When you go out for a while, and you give your dog a treat or bone, and they DON'T eat it. They only wait till you get home then eat that treat and feel relaxed enough to eat it.
Remember your dog knows the treat is a precious resource to it, so the fact your dog won't eat it whilst you are out can tell us very quickly how stressed they are.
Another clear behaviour that can occur is they will like to collect personal items and chew them potentially. Again, this can also be a puppy behaviour so be careful not to just assume the worst if they are doing this.
If your dog or puppy is doing any of this behaviour its best to speak to a professional or email us for more information to help you get this under control. In extreme cases of anxiety, your vet along with your behaviourist may want to use medication to calm the dog down. In my cases, I only go along the path of medication if it is extreme. The medication usually cannot be used long term unless your vet decides this is best so it is only a band aid fix, with separation anxiety you need to get to the root of the problem.
Separation anxiety can usually be fixed, however remember we are dealing with a living being, so it can't just be fixed overnight and is a very fragile process in making it better and getting your dog well balanced from this illness.
When looking for dog a dog trainer, no matter what area of dog training, make sure you research the company you are wanting to hire.
There are many one man/woman businesses out there who will dazzle you with qualifications and listings and memberships and most of all LOW PRICES, however will not deliver when dealing with your dog, either the results you require OR the customer service that you expect.
The old saying - 'you get what you pay for' is literally that.
When dealing with a dog and behaviour issues, the trainer needs to have the confidence to deal with any dog, any situation and read the dog, its body language carefully, otherwise not only yours but the trainers' confidence will be completely lost.
Once confidence is lost, the dog will not respond to them and thats when things can go wrong. Then you will become a frustrated dog owner paying for a service that doesn't fix the problems.
Many people, including some trainers out there don't realise what a dog is actually capable of doing if they haven't ever seen it or dealt with it before.
Most dog trainers out there are self taught, therefore all of their work/knowledge will come with their experience - please ask as many questions as you can about the trainer you are about to hire, about their experience, not just about qualifications.
Good luck in searching for dog training and when you do find a good dog trainer, stick with them!

Getting your dog to come to you. Use a long rope or lead and attach it to your dog. Let your dog go and do its own thing, then when it doesnt expect it, call your dog to you and reel your dog in. Lots of praising your dog when they do come to you and sit in front of you. Allow your dog to move off again, and when they least expect it, call them to you and reel them in again if you need to. If and when they come to you and sit in front of you, lots of praise again! Make it really exciting that they come to you and listen to you.
Always follow through with your dog when you ask them to do something.

This is my new puppy Maya, she is 3 months old born May 5 this year. I have been clicker training her for about 9 days and we’ve had her for about 14 days total. We use the harness for walking her and the bell to notice when she stops so we don’t yank her head off, the harness has worked a lot better then a regular collar when we go on walks.

@tallybaby82 Sadly … @tallybaby82 Sadly no, remember, you can train a dog, but you can not train a woman. “wife and dog missing, reward for dog, you can keep the wife” – from a bumper sticker.

1. - DINNER - We all feel full and sleepy after eating a meal, so make sure your dog is fed and relaxed to lie down before the fireworks begin. Also take your dog for a good walk before the fireworks start or do some obedience with them, this will stimulate their mind and remember stimulating their mind makes them mentally exhausted after at least 10 minutes, so this will also make them sleepy and want to rest.
2. - DEN - Make sure your dog has a safe place to retreat to, its bed, its crate, its kennel and make sure they are safe and well protected. Dogs are den animals and like to be in smaller protected places, it makes them feel secure and more relaxed. Conduct a safety check to make sure your dog is not in harms way whilst you are out when the fireworks are on. Check for any potential hazards around if your dog does panic. If you have to tie your dog up, make sure they are safe from harm and away from fences that they could possibly jump over and cause injury to themselves. Ensure that their bedding is accessible and comfortable. Try and minimise the noise and fireworks flashes too, consider closing the curtains and leaving the television or radio on (as long as they fireworks arent being played on these devices!).
3. - DISTRACTION - Make sure you distract your dog during the time the fireworks are on, play games with your dog, have their favourite toy and interact with them in a positive way. Make it a fun time for your dog to play and get out and about with you. Again, this is mental stimulation, so it helps to use their mind and tire them out as well, to then encourage to go and lie down and not stress. If you are not going to be home, consider enriching their environment with lots of toys and treats, making the area nice and safe and positive for your dog. Consider a distraction so your dog doesn't focus on the noise when the fireworks are happening.
4. - DESENSITISATION - Many pets are helped through desensitisation programs, there are many CD's and DVD's available to prepare your dog weeks prior to a fireworks event happening. These are very successful if followed correctly and its best to speak to your vet or behaviourist about which products they recommend using. Following these programs and over weeks, your dog will become more used to the noises and desensitise to the fireworks.
5. - DAP - This stands for Dog Appeasing Pheromone. They are a plug-in device, similiar to an air freshener, which releases calming pheromones into the air. They should be used in the room your pet is going to spend the most time in and used for 24 hours a day for 2 weeks prior to the event occurring. These devices are only recently available in Australia, so please check with your vet as to what they recommend.
<< Uncategorized Basic Dog Training Tips : How to Train a Dog to Stop Barking >>
Don’t you wish everyone would train their dog? How often have you seen people being towed down the street by a big dog wearing a harness? How about the dogs that bark at anything that moves, jump up on guests or attack anything that moves out on the street?
This stuff has got to stop. In my opinion, you should have to have a dog-ownership license before you can have a dog, the same way you have to have a drivers license before getting behind the wheel.
The only place I’ve heard of where this is actually done is Austria. They actually have a dog owner’s license and state sponsored training schools, and the cost of the license is inversely proportionate to the amount of training your dog has undergone. The cost of owning an untrained dog is very, very high and comes down in steps as the dog completes the training courses. The cost of having a fully trained dog is almost nothing.
This seems a bit draconian, but then Austria is a germanic country where the trains run on time. I’m not sure I’m entirely in favor of the Austrian system, but it seems to me entirely appropriate to require anyone who wants to own a dog to at least complete a basic course. This would be for the dog’s benefit and for the public at large. Certainly when you see some of the dog/owner gong shows on the street it makes a lot of sense.
I’m a Canadian, and all this would really be is a repeat of the laws we now have for firearms. You can get a gun legally in Canada, but you have to take a firearms safety course and demonstrate basic competence first. Same thing should go for having a dog.
This blog is all about dog training tips. There are simple steps you can take to have a respectful, well-adjusted dog. Simply try to incorporate each of the tips into all your interactions with your dog. Master one, get it working and see the improvement in your dog. Then try the next. Lather, rinse, repeat. When you have incorporated all the dog training tips, you won’t recognize your dog.
These dog training tips won’t win you first place in obedience trials or teach your dog to retrieve ducks and he won’t be able to guide a blind person around town. That is a much higher level of specialized training and isn’t what we are after at all. The goal is to produce a good dog for companionship. A good family dog. Once you establish this basis you can go on to bigger and better things if you want to.
It seems to me that there is a real disconnect in this field. There are all kinds of systems out there for high-level training of all kinds, but there is very little available for the person who just wants to have a good dog that is safe, obedient and pleasant to be around. That is what I’m trying to target with these dog training tips, and I make no apology for it. If that’s what you’re looking for, check in again soon and we’ll get those training tips going. See you soon.
New mums and dads out there dont realise that sometimes they actually choose the wrong breed for them and their environment.
Have a think about what lifestyle you have, where you live, how big your backyard is, how much time you have to spend and really train and stimulate your dog and your dogs mind. Think about kids, babies, are you planning a family, have you just had a baby, are little kids running around or do you have many other pets which might not like the new addition, such as cats or chickens? Vice versa, your dog might not like them.
Its very unfair of you to choose a dog and then expect him/her just to fit into your environment and lifestyle. As humans, we expect just to be able to have this happen, but we forget they are a different species and we expect them to just 'fit in' to our human society.
Research the breed you are thinking of taking into your environment, speak to your vet, your behaviourist, your breeder, your trainer and it will give you a better idea of what breed will work for you and your family. This way you are setting everyone up for success!
