we are different species, dogs live in the moment and they are associating praise or the tone of the praise and if we praise at the wrong time, such as when they are feeling unsure or nervous then we can actually feed that emotion instead. When Im running a puppy school, if I have a nervous or fearful puppy, i i will ask the owners to simply ignore their puppy and let him/her comeout from under the chair or behind their legs of their own accord. A puppy does not need to be forced out, it will actually make them feeling worse, remember they are trusting they will be ok, if you take over and if you prove to them that their feelings actually get worse they will lost trust and respect for you and you will go backwards in your training.
Only praise when they are showing BRAVE behaviour. Ignore any NON BRAVE behaviour, it will make a very big difference to your dog if you follow these basic rules.
Your timing has to be spot on to priase, within 3 seconds I like to tell my clients, so they are onto it straight away when their dog is showing brave behaviour.
Labradors We train a lot of Labrador dogs, puppies, you name it, not matter what age, what behaviour problem we deal with it. Labradors can be a great dog, family pet and also work tool. They are used throughout the world as sniffer dogs, detection dogs, guard dogs, as well as family pet where you feel comfortable knowing they can run around with the kids and have fun, without causing any harm. Labradors are known for their eating for one! They LOVE food, I’ve come across a couple that aren’t too food oriented, but overall this is not the case and food is the way to their heart, soul, everything! Labradors are also just big puppy dogs for years in their demeanour. They love greeting, jumping up, being your best friend, getting lots of pats and attention, and most of all being rewarded with their favourite treats. Labrador puppies are the most adorable, they really are! No one can ever say they don’t think that Labrador puppy isn’t cute! Owners choose Labradors for their beautiful temperament and nature, however they can also be quite dominant and challenging if managed or brought up the wrong way. Always be careful, no matter what breed around kids with the dog, even our beloved Labrador. Some of the worst cases of aggression, territorial and fear have been from Labradors. Again, like any dog, if they are not given the correct leadership and discipline (in a positive way), they will become dominant not through choose, but through necessity. Be careful of Labradors around young kids, remember young kids are smaller in body size and so sometimes the dog won’t respect the kids and see them as ‘play things’ instead of higher up in that hierarchy that you want to create at home. Also with kids, when they have food, Labradors in particular will do anything to get near that food! So teach your kids to keep food away and not lying around, I know this can be hard, so also teach the dog that it is wrong to steal food from fingers, hands, off tables and benches, anywhere that isn’t desirable for the dog to be taking the food from, basically anywhere except out of its own bowl. Don’t get me wrong, I love all dogs, Labradors are so friendly and beautiful and ridiculously good looking! Just remember to research the breed, any breed you are looking to adopt or purchase as a new puppy....you won’t be disappointed, just keep up your basics and you will be fine. Labrador retrievers are full of personality and love to give!
The 49th Annual NZIACO conference last week was a huge success and enjoyed by all. The venue was in the beautiful art Deco town of Napier on the North Island. With the official opening by Her Worship the Mayor of Napier Barbara Arnott the seminar was then under way with some excellent and experienced speakers. The animal control officers from all over New Zealand received a feast of quality information to assist them with their very important jobs. The seminar was absolutly first class with a great venue “The Napier War Memorial Centre” over looking the beach. Gary covered a variety of subjects including evaluation and temperament testing, Dog Bite Prevention, Signs, Electric collars and more.
It wasn’t all work as I managed to sample some fine wines from the Hawks Bay region, go Bungy jumping, Ride a Jet Boat at Huka falls, Helicopter joy flights and sky dive over the beautiful Lake Taupo . I Even fitted in some Skiing on Mount Ruapehu.
Congratulations to Grant Blackley for putting together a truly great event.
My thoughts are with the families of the 9 people that tragically had their lives cut short in the sky diving accident on the south Island of New Zealand and the Christchurch victims of the earthquake, the largest in NZ since the Napier Earthquake in 1931.
This is Nero, the photos were taken by Zoo Studios here in Brisbane. Nero has featured on television as Seans puppy on Totally Wild, a childrens program that runs on Channel 10. This is also where I have done some training with him, to show kids how to easily train their dog to sit, drop, stay and walk on the lead nicely. The show is pitched at 8 year olds and above and they cover all different types of animals and acitivites, its a lot of fun and a great time to be included in some segments. The people i worked with there were all so easy going and professional, it was great. I wasnt even phased talking in front of the camera.

God dude! Tight … God dude! Tight enough shorts? Don’t get too excited over your suckish trained dog’s lousy circle or else you’ll pop a wheelie in your pants and take out the camera guy. AND this thing you call a trick… is not a freakin trick!! You simply pulled your dog around you by the leash. ANYONE can do that. Don’t really need a how to video on it.

I don’t think this … I don’t think this guy is much of an expert on dog training! The dog does not seem that interested in the training, and that’s always important. And this guy pulls the dog in to position. Don’t do that!! My sheperd does this very excitingly! I agree with pywlwywry; LEARN before you TEACH

Look almost at the end of the video he tells the dog to sit, the dog apparently didn’t hear him so he just use his hand to push the dog’s butt down. Wow, what a fascinating technique. They call that teaching style “The old new follow your dog and use your hand to push and/or pull their butt technique”

Wanna work towards building dog confidence? Is your dog nervous around other dogs and people? If you follow these basic steps, you'll find an increase in your dog confidence levels.
It is vital when trying to build up dog confidence that you show good canine leadership to your dog. This is the same as showing leadership in day-to-day life with people. If you are unsure as to what to do here, there are plenty of self-help books on how to be a good leader. If you exude confidence yourself, this will rub off on your pet in the shape of increased dog confidence.
Feed your dog after you, with this have your dog show manners before receiving its food source.
Go through doorways and gates first, teach your dog to wait and go through last.
Only allow your dog up on furniture or bedding on invitation.
Ignore as much attention seeking from your dog as possible.
Don't feed your dog from the table.
Don't allow your dog to meet and greet your visitors until your dog is calm and relaxed.
Allow people to pat your dog, once your dog is in a calm sit position.
Don't allow your dog to jump up on people, especially children.
Teach your dog lots of obedience and tricks training. This builds confidence and trust in you and your decision making.
Correct your dog properly, only using a vocal correction. NEVER HIT OR SMACK YOUR DOG.
Praise and reward your dog for any BRAVE behaviour he/she shows.
Following these basics will help to build dog confidence!
Dog parks are wonderful places and here are some things to remember about dog park etiquette when going with your dog.
Keep your dog on lead until they reach inside the park, then let them off.
Don't crowd around the gates, also making sure that all gates are shut behind you so doggies can't escape!
Pick up after your dog!
Keep an eye on your dog at all times, don't leave your dog there whilst you go do your shopping!
Invest in training so your dog will come back to you when called..this is hard work and takes a lot of practice.
If your dog doesn't like certain breeds of dogs, then go at times when those types of dogs aren't there.
If you have kids with you, don't let them play their own games in dog parks, but instead remember dog parks are places for dogs to run around and have fun!
Enjoy meeting and greeting with other dog owners and talk about your dogs, make friends, and maybe even meet a single!
Practising good dog park etiquette is key to having a relaxing and fun time in a dog park.
TWO young Australian combat engineers on their first deployment in Afghanistan have been killed by a bomb in the army’s worst combat loss in a single day since the Vietnam War.
A bomb detonated during a patrol on Monday morning, killing Sapper Jacob Moerland, 21, and Sapper Darren Smith, 26, both from the Brisbane-based 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment.
Sapper Smith’s bomb-detection dog, Herbie, was also killed in the blast.
We must never forget those who have given their lives in the cause of protecting our country. This is the supreme sacrifice and being a member of our armed forces has many uncertainties and huge risks. “What a brave group of Australians”. My heartfelt sympathy goes to their families and friends. We must look after their families and never forget what they have lost. Herbie also lost his life and we often forget that animals play an important role in conflicts by saving lives as a dog squad member. Rest in Peace Jacob, Darren and Herbie. Lest we Forget
This scenario is given to me a LOT, my clients have a nervous dog or uncertain dog or puppy. One of the first things I ask my clients is about the dogs heritage, breeding etc. did they meet the parents? Do they know whether its in the breeding at all, let alone the actual breed they have as well.
After we know this information, then we need to look at what age they got the dog, what the history and experiences of the dog/puppy is, has any of it imprinted during that crucial time (6-16 weeks for puppies), what interaction the owner has and how they relate to the dog when there is nervousness going on.
Once we have established all of this, then we can devise a plan of attack as to how we can improve the dogs confidence and that in turn will help fear, nervousness, uncertainty.
There are many variables to consider here, but most of all, if you provide good leadership you will have your dog trusting you more and also respecting you more.
Its like a domino effect, it really is, once you get respect as a great leader to your canine, everything else will fall into place to a certain degree.
Well this is an interesting one, when your dog is attacked by another dog, it can really affect their self confidence, they recognise breeds and can easily be nervous or scared around the breed in the future. Dont throw them straight back into the same environment again, as in if it happened in the dog park.
Dog parks are a problem, they can be wonderful, however they can also cause lots of problems. There are so many variables to a dog park and not every dog likes every other dog, just like humans, we don’t like all humans, we cant expect our dogs to like every other dog.
Take it slowly and build your dos confidence again, take them out for walks that are positive and full of fun and don’t have them too close to other dogs initially, maybe across the street or something like that, not too close otherwise another dog might be too intimidating to your dog.
If you force your dog to interact too soon with other dogs, as this will force your dog into a corner where they only have two reactions, fight or flight and you don’t want this.
Look at getting a professional behaviourist to look at your dogs issues, regarding nervousness, phobias, shaking, uncertainty and make sure the methods are positive and ALSO not ‘fluffy’, as in the beat around the bush and don’t really get anywhere with the dog....this will actually make your dog worse.
